How to play Snakes and Ladders

Choose a round of Snakes and Ladders and settle into its rules. Reach square 100 exactly. A roll past 100 leaves the token where it is. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Treat the first round as a chance to learn the controls. Look at what changes after your first action.

Try a deliberate move

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Reach square 100 exactly. A roll past 100 leaves the token where it is. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Take a moment to understand the current position.

Step by step

  1. Player 1 rolls first, starting before square 1.
  2. Move the number of squares shown by the die.
  3. Follow a snake or ladder when landing on its starting square.
  4. Alternate turns until one player reaches 100.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Look at the feedback after the action.

A useful example

From square 98, rolling 2 wins. Rolling 3 overshoots and leaves the token at 98. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Notice the change in the playing area.

Watch out for this

A roll of six does not grant an extra turn in this version. Compare the situation with the worked example. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
